Mental Health In The Workplace

The Importance of Supporting Mental Health In The Workplace

The Workplace Mental Health Challenge

Understanding The Reality

Mental health challenges don’t discriminate by job title, industry, or seniority. Every day in Australian workplaces, talented employees struggle in silence while their managers watch helplessly, unsure how to help without making things worse.

The statistics paint a confronting picture: one in five Australians experience mental health challenges in any given year, and two in five will face a mental disorder during their lifetime. For businesses, this translates to billions lost annually through absenteeism, presenteeism, and workers’ compensation claims—costs that are largely preventable with the right skills and support structures in place.

New psychosocial hazard regulations now require employers to proactively identify and manage psychological risks in the workplace. Yet compliance alone isn’t the answer. Ticking boxes doesn’t give your managers the confidence to have difficult conversations, doesn’t help your team members support a struggling colleague, and doesn’t create the cultural shift that makes genuine psychological safety possible.

The RULES Framework: Our Evidence-Based Methodology - Mental Health Pro

The Gap We Bridge

We’ve witnessed this gap firsthand. Our founder, Sharon McCulloch, spent over two decades as an Emergency Care Registered Nurse, watching distressed families arrive at emergency departments saying, “I wish I’d known what to do.” As CEO of First Aid Pro—training more than 150,000 Australians annually—she observed the same patterns in workplace settings: talented teams fracturing when stress became overwhelming, departments losing momentum when key people struggled silently, and the domino effect of untreated anxiety spreading through entire organisations.

Mental Health Pro exists because we believe no one should feel helpless when someone they work with is struggling. Just as we’ve made physical first aid a universal skill, we’re making mental health education equally accessible—practical, evidence-based, and embedded into everyday workplace culture.

Our Workplace Mental Health Training Solutions

We offer a suite of workplace mental health programs designed to meet different needs, from nationally accredited mental health qualifications to recognised MHFA certifications. Each of our mental health courses builds practical skills that participants can apply immediately—at work and in their personal lives.

Our Approach To Mental Health Workplace Training

More Than Awareness—We Build Confident Mental Health Support Officers!

Generic awareness training tells people that mental health matters. Our training shows them exactly what to do about it.

Every Mental Health Pro training program is grounded in clinical expertise and real-world application. We don’t deliver theoretical lectures—we create interactive, scenario-based learning experiences that build genuine confidence. Participants don’t just learn what mental health challenges look like; they practise the conversations, develop the responses, and leave equipped to act.

Mental Health In The Workplace

The Mental Health RULES Action Plan Framework

At the heart of our training is the RULES Framework—our proprietary, evidence-based action plan that gives people a clear pathway from recognition to response:

This isn’t abstract theory—it’s a practical roadmap anyone can follow, regardless of their role or prior experience with mental health.

Mental Health Regulations & Code of Practice

Australian workplace health and safety regulations now explicitly require employers to identify and manage psychosocial risks. The Model Code of Practice: Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work provides guidance on meeting these obligations, and penalties for non-compliance are significant.

But compliance is just the starting point. Organisations that genuinely prioritise psychological safety see benefits far beyond avoiding penalties—they build stronger teams, retain talented people, and create workplaces where everyone can thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can you train at once?

Our onsite training typically accommodates groups of up to 20 participants, depending on the course. Smaller groups allow for more interactive discussion and practice; larger groups can be arranged with additional facilitators. We’ll work with you to find the right format for your team.

Yes. We’re committed to making mental health training accessible across Australia, including regional and remote locations. Additional travel costs may apply for locations outside major metropolitan areas—we’ll provide a clear quote upfront.
We recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks in advance for onsite training to ensure facilitator availability and allow time for customisation. However, we understand that needs can arise quickly—contact us and we’ll do our best to accommodate urgent requests.
We require a suitable training room with seating for all participants, a projector or large screen, whiteboard or flip chart, and basic amenities. We bring all training materials, workbooks, and resources.
Both courses build mental health first aid skills, but they have different focuses. The 11379NAT Course in Initial Response to a Mental Health Crisis is specifically designed for Australian workplaces and directly addresses WHS compliance requirements. It uses our RULES Framework methodology. MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) is an internationally recognised program with a broader focus on understanding mental health conditions. Many organisations choose to offer both, depending on roles and requirements.
It depends on your goals. If you need to meet specific WHS compliance requirements or want designated Mental Health Support Officers with nationally accredited qualifications, the 11379NAT course is ideal. If you want basic mental health education across your organisation, a MHFA course is a good choice. We’re happy to discuss your specific situation and recommend the best approach for your team!
Our 11379NAT Course in Initial Response to a Mental Health Crisis is nationally accredited, and participants receive a Statement of Attainment from our RTO (31124). MHFA courses are accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia, and participants can become Mental Health First Aiders if they choose to pursue certification externally, however it is not a nationally accredited course.
Our training supports your compliance with psychosocial hazard obligations under WHS legislation. The 11379NAT course specifically addresses the skills required to recognise and respond to psychosocial risks. However, training is one part of a comprehensive approach—our psychosocial consulting services can help you build complete compliance frameworks.
We recommend refresher training within two years for the 11379NAT course and 3 years for MHFA to maintain current skills and knowledge. MHFA accreditation requires refresher training to renew.
Yes. All participants receive appropriate certification upon successful completion—either a Statement of Attainment for nationally accredited first aid mental health courses or a certificate of completion for other MHFA programs.
Pricing depends on the course, number of participants, location, and any customisation required. We provide transparent, all-inclusive quotes with no hidden fees. Contact our corporate team for a tailored quote based on your specific needs.
All training materials, workbooks, resources, certificates, and facilitator costs are included. For onsite training, we bring everything needed to deliver the program—you just provide the venue and participants
Simply complete our online enquiry form, call us on 1300 029 132, or email enquiries@mentalhealthpro.com.au. Our corporate team will discuss your needs and provide a detailed quote within 24–48 hours.
